social bookmarking

My goal is to encourage you to adopt a social bookmarking application, and ultimately to have it become integral for your own academic and personal use. There are many apps of this nature available online, but my favorite is Pinboard. Pinboard is a cloud application (not device-specific) and is incredibly useful for all sorts of purposes, including teaching this class.

Browse and play with mine at https://pinboard.in/u:michaelvmiller. I started it about 10 years ago and have since pinned over 20,000 items.

Try the following:

  1. Go to https://pinboard.in/u:michaelvmiller and click on the tag 3193 to examine the body of potential resources tagged for this course (see list of tags on right side of page). To clear that search, go to left-side top of page and click on my name.
  2. Next, go to the search box located on right-side top of page and type in the tags 3193 VIDEO (then click on “search this user” to enter tags). This will bring up all the videos that might relate to our class. To go back further in bookmarking time, click on “earlier” when you get to bottom of page. Again, to clear that search, go to left-side top of page and click on my name.
  3. Next, enter 3193 OVR in search box (this will give you all the online video collections that might relate to our class).
  4. Try other tag combinations, for example, 3193 OCCUPATIONS. Then add an additional tag to further delimit: (3193 OCCUPATIONS VIDEO).
  5. Search what other members of Pinboard community have tagged on our subject. Of course, they will not use 3193, but enter OCCUPATIONS and then click on “search all.”
  6. Additional searches: Some of my favorite content can be found under the following tags:

Gem

Ads

Best (many lists of movies and documentaries included)

CREATIVITY

INTERACTIVE

HUMOR

Pinboard is a subscription-based application, costing $22 a year. In my opinion, the product is well-worth the price (see brief tutorial on Pinboard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqphSmguiFY). However, you may use another application that is free. I suggest Diigo https://www.diigo.com/ since it is much like Pinboard (see brief tutorial on Diigo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa80eixqChM).

Assignment Requirements

To start your social bookmarking page, create an account for yourself at Pinboard https://pinboard.in or Diigo https://www.diigo.com/. Then begin pinning internet content that you’d like to keep for future reference. Note: you’ll need to create “tags” (key terms) for each piece of content that you pin. Make sure you add bookmarklet buttons to your browser tool bar for your app (one to bring up the box used for saving a web page and the other to access all of your tagged web pages (see tutorials above on how to do this).

To revisit content you have marked, click on the tag you created for it or enter the tag in the search box, and then click on Search Mine (for Pinboard; to see content that you and all other Pinboard users have pinned for that tag, click on Search All).

For purposes of meeting this assignment, I specifically ask you to do the following once you’ve created your account:

  1. Find and tag at least 10 videos for each of the following concepts:
  1. Industrial revolution
  2. job termination
  3. multinational corporations
  4. worker alienation
  5. labor strikes
  1. In the “description” section for each video that you’ve tagged, write a brief summary about the video and why it is relevant for our course.
  2. Find and tag at least 10 websites relevant to the subject of work and occupations. Be sure to tag these so they are differentiated from the videos tagged in the first instruction.
  3. On a WORD document: Along with your name, cite the URL for your social bookmarking page. Next, describe in your own words what you see as the value of social bookmarking. Finally, specify if you intend to use social bookmarking in the future to meet your own needs. Be sure to include in your answer why you will use it or why you will not use it.
  4. Upload your document to the Blackboard assignment box labeled Submission Box: SOCIAL BOOKMARKING.

Extra-credit amount: 25 points on scale of 1000.
