1. Introduction

Over the past two decades, the ecology through which educational knowledge is produced, distributed, and encountered has undergone a profound transformation. Digital technologies now provide instructors with access to an extraordinary range of scholarly and instructional resources. Materials that once required extensive searching—or were simply unavailable—can often be located almost immediately. Yet this remarkable expansion in access has created a problem of its own. Instructors now encounter far more potentially valuable material than can reasonably be evaluated, remembered, or incorporated into teaching.

Much professional attention understandably focuses on individual resources. An instructor looking for material on a particular topic may search for an article, video, report, dataset, or other resource, evaluate its usefulness, and preserve or incorporate it into teaching. Such resource-centered work remains indispensable. But digital abundance has made another feature of the knowledge environment increasingly consequential: many valuable resources emerge from sources that continue producing new work.

A useful article may come from a journal that regularly publishes relevant scholarship. An effective video may come from a creator with an expanding collection. A valuable report may lead to an organization that continues producing research and educational materials. In each case, the individual resource matters in its own right, but it may also reveal something else—a continuing source of potentially valuable future knowledge.

The distinction is simple but consequential. An individual resource is finite; a continuing source has a future. Once an article, video, or report has been discovered and evaluated, the immediate professional task surrounding that resource may be substantially complete. A productive journal, creator, organization, or other repository, by contrast, may produce something valuable tomorrow, next month, or years later. If that future work matters, the professional problem extends beyond finding and preserving individual resources. It also involves identifying productive sources and finding ways to remain connected to them over time.

This paper develops Repository Thinking as a conceptual orientation toward that additional level of professional attention. Repository Thinking does not propose replacing resource-centered discovery, evaluation, or curation. Rather, it asks professionals to consider the continuing repositories from which valuable resources emerge as potential objects of sustained attention in their own right. A familiar question—Is this resource useful?—is therefore supplemented by another: Who produced this—and what else do they produce?

That second question becomes increasingly important under conditions of digital abundance. No instructor can systematically examine every potentially useful resource produced across an expanding knowledge environment. Attention is necessarily selective. Identifying productive repositories provides one means of concentrating that limited attention by establishing continuing relationships with sources that have demonstrated potential professional value. Repository Thinking is offered not as a description of what instructors necessarily do, but as a sensitizing concept for recognizing and responding to this feature of the contemporary knowledge environment.

A further practical question then follows: once a productive repository has been identified, how can that relationship be sustained? This paper proposes the Discovery–Monitoring–Organization (DMO) framework as one response. Discovery brings potentially valuable repositories into professional awareness; Monitoring supports continuing awareness as those repositories produce new work; and Organization preserves accumulated resources, relationships, and professional judgments for future use. These functions are not tied to particular technologies. Rather, they describe recurring forms of professional work made increasingly consequential by continuing digital production.

Sustained over time, these practices may contribute to what we call Professional Memory: the accumulated capacity to preserve, reconnect with, interpret, and apply professional knowledge across years of teaching and scholarship. From this perspective, the challenge posed by digital abundance is not simply how to find more information. It is how to create continuity within an environment in which useful knowledge continually appears, expands, and changes.

The sections that follow develop this argument in stages. Section 2 elaborates Repository Thinking as a conceptual orientation. Section 3 examines the historical developments that increased the professional significance of continuing repositories and the problems of scale associated with resource-centered curation. Section 4 introduces the DMO framework as a practical means of sustaining repository-level attention, while Section 5 considers how these practices can support Professional Memory over time. The conclusion considers the broader implications of Repository Thinking for professional work within continually expanding knowledge environments.

2. Repository Thinking: An Additional Level of Professional Attention

Repository Thinking begins with a simple observation: a valuable resource may also reveal a valuable source. An article, video, report, podcast, visualization, or other resource may be useful for an immediate instructional purpose. Yet the journal, creator, organization, research center, or other source responsible for that resource may represent something more—a continuing repository capable of producing additional valuable work over time.

Repository Thinking directs professional attention toward this additional possibility. It does not diminish the importance of individual resources or replace the familiar work of discovering, evaluating, and curating them. Rather, it supplements resource-centered attention by treating the continuing sources from which valuable materials emerge as potential objects of professional attention in their own right. The relevant question therefore expands from Is this resource useful? to include Who produced this—and what else do they produce?

Repository Thinking as a Sensitizing Concept

Repository Thinking is best understood as a sensitizing concept rather than a particular technology, organizational system, or prescribed workflow. It draws attention to a feature of the contemporary knowledge environment that may otherwise remain easy to overlook: individual resources frequently belong to larger bodies of work whose value can extend beyond the resource initially encountered.

This distinction matters because professional attention is limited. In an environment containing more potentially valuable material than any instructor can systematically examine, the problem is not simply how to discover additional resources. It is also how to decide where continuing attention may be most productively directed. A resource that proves especially valuable provides one possible signal. Rather than ending with the resource itself, discovery can prompt examination of the source that produced it.

Repository Thinking therefore adds a repository-level perspective to resource-level evaluation. At the resource level, instructors may ask about accuracy, relevance, quality, accessibility, or instructional usefulness. At the repository level, different questions become possible: Does this source regularly produce work relevant to my professional interests? What is the scope and character of its collection? Is its work sufficiently valuable to warrant continued attention? The two levels are complementary. Evaluating a repository does not determine the value of every resource it contains, just as evaluating an individual resource does not establish the value of everything its source may subsequently produce.

The Continuing Repository

The concept of the continuing repository is central to Repository Thinking. Repositories are not new. Libraries, journals, archives, museums, and professional organizations have long preserved and distributed knowledge. What matters here is a particular characteristic increasingly consequential within digital environments: the repository remains productive over time.

A continuing repository combines accumulated content with the possibility of future production. Its existing collection provides immediate professional value, but that collection is not necessarily complete. New articles may be published, new videos released, new reports issued, or new materials added as the source continues its work. The repository therefore has both a past and a future.

This temporal quality distinguishes repository-level attention from attention directed only toward a completed individual resource. An instructor may discover, evaluate, save, and use a particular resource without needing to maintain an ongoing relationship with it. A continuing repository presents an additional possibility. If its future production is likely to remain valuable, the professional task may extend beyond preserving what has already been found to maintaining some form of connection with the source itself.

This does not require every useful resource to lead to a continuing professional relationship. Many valuable materials may remain valuable as individual items, and many repositories will not warrant sustained attention. Repository Thinking instead encourages a selective judgment: when a resource proves valuable, its source becomes worth considering. The repository is therefore not automatically privileged over the resource; it becomes an additional object of evaluation.

From Resource Discovery to Repository Recognition

This distinction changes the potential meaning of discovery. In conventional resource-centered searching, locating a useful item may reasonably mark the successful completion of the search. Repository Thinking introduces another possible step. The resource can also function as an entry point through which its source becomes visible.

The progression is straightforward:

Is this useful?

Who produced this—and what else do they produce?

The first question evaluates the immediate resource. The second evaluates whether that discovery may point toward a larger and potentially continuing body of valuable work. Repository Thinking resides primarily in this second move.

This orientation can apply across very different forms of professional knowledge. A journal article may lead an instructor to continuing scholarship within a journal; a report may reveal an organization with a substantial publication program; an instructional video may provide entry into a creator's larger collection. What these cases share is not a particular medium or technology, but a movement from the value of one encountered resource toward consideration of the productive source behind it.

Repository Thinking and Professional Judgment

Repository Thinking consequently depends upon professional judgment rather than indiscriminate accumulation. The objective is not to follow every journal, creator, organization, or collection encountered. Doing so would merely reproduce the problem of information abundance at another level. The relevant task is selective: identifying repositories whose continuing production appears sufficiently valuable to justify sustained professional attention.

That judgment can change over time. A repository that once proved highly useful may become less relevant; another may develop in unexpected directions; new sources may emerge as professional interests or instructional responsibilities change. Repository Thinking therefore treats repository relationships as objects of continuing evaluation rather than permanent commitments.

This point also distinguishes Repository Thinking from simple subscription or collection behavior. Following a channel, joining a mailing list, saving a website, or subscribing to a feed does not by itself constitute Repository Thinking. Such actions may support it, but the underlying orientation is conceptual: recognizing productive sources, evaluating their continuing relevance, and deliberately deciding where professional attention should be sustained.

A Complementary Level of Professional Attention

Repository Thinking is therefore not a proposal to replace resource-centered curation with repository-centered curation. Individual resources remain the immediate objects through which much teaching and learning occur, and their quality must still be judged individually. Repository-level attention addresses a different question: whether the productive source behind a resource may itself possess continuing professional value.

The distinction is important because the two levels support different forms of professional work. Resource-centered attention helps instructors identify and evaluate materials for particular purposes. Repository-centered attention helps identify sources whose continuing work may deserve awareness across multiple purposes and over longer periods of time. One concerns the value of an item; the other concerns the prospective value of a source.

Seen in this way, Repository Thinking represents an extension rather than a rejection of established approaches to educational resource discovery and curation. It preserves their concern with the quality and usefulness of individual materials while adding attention to the continuing environments from which those materials emerge.

The historical conditions that have made this additional level of attention increasingly consequential did not appear all at once. They developed as digital production expanded, continuing repositories became more numerous and accessible, and resource-by-resource curation confronted increasing problems of scale. The next section examines that historical development and the changing knowledge environment from which Repository Thinking emerges.

3. The Historical Development of Repository Thinking

Repository Thinking is best understood against changes in the digital knowledge environment over the past several decades. Rather than presenting a comprehensive history of educational technology, this section examines several developments that changed how professional knowledge was produced, distributed, and made available for instructional use. Of particular importance were the early emphasis on finding and curating individual digital resources, the growth of continuing online repositories, the increasing scale of digital production, and uneven disciplinary attention to these developments. Together, these changes provide the historical context for Repository Thinking.

The Resource-Centered Orientation of Early Digital Curation

Collections and repositories of professional knowledge long predate the digital era. Libraries, journals, archives, professional organizations, and other institutions have historically gathered and preserved resources for continuing use. The development considered here therefore does not involve a historical transition from individual resources to collections. Rather, it concerns a change in what becomes practical and important when digital technologies make both individual resources and the continuing sources that produce them vastly more accessible.

Early developments in educational technology understandably placed considerable emphasis on individual digital resources. Learning Objects, metadata standards, digital libraries, reusable instructional materials, and later Open Educational Resources (OER) reflected a common concern with making high-quality materials easier to discover, evaluate, share, and incorporate into teaching. Initiatives such as MERLOT complemented these efforts through peer review, cataloging, and other forms of quality assurance intended to strengthen the usefulness and legitimacy of digital instructional resources within higher education.

This emphasis addressed an important problem of the emerging digital environment: finding useful materials. Online instructional resources remained comparatively limited in quantity and accessibility, and considerable effort could be required simply to locate something appropriate for classroom use. Much of the early educational-technology literature consequently treated the individual resource as a principal object of discovery, evaluation, and curation. Finding a useful website, simulation, learning object, or video—and determining how it might contribute to teaching—represented a meaningful accomplishment in itself.

Resource-centered curation remained important as the web expanded. The Sociological Cinema (TSC) provides a useful illustration. Although TSC itself developed into a substantial online collection, its curatorial approach focused primarily on identifying individual videos and providing sociological and pedagogical context for their use. Its hundreds of posts therefore illustrate an important distinction: a repository can itself be built through repeated acts of individual-resource curation. The relevant historical development is not that resources somehow became repositories. It is that an expanding digital environment made it increasingly useful to direct professional attention at both levels.

The Growth of Continuing Digital Repositories

At the same time, the technological conditions supporting professional knowledge production were changing rapidly. Increased network capacity made online multimedia increasingly practical, while inexpensive digital production tools lowered barriers to creating and distributing content. Web-based publishing allowed individuals and organizations to reach audiences directly. Open-access publishing broadened access to scholarship, while online-first publication and preprint services accelerated its circulation.

These developments did more than increase the number of resources available. They greatly expanded the ability of knowledge producers to maintain accessible bodies of work that could continue growing over time. Journals could make earlier scholarship searchable while continually adding new publications. Organizations could maintain collections of reports and educational materials while producing additional work. Individual creators could develop substantial bodies of instructional media whose past and future contributions remained connected through the same source.

Continuing repositories were not historically new. What changed were the conditions under which they could operate and be encountered. Digital repositories could combine persistent access to earlier work with ongoing production, rapid distribution, searchability, and direct navigation between individual items and their sources. Subscriptions, feeds, alerts, and related technologies also made it increasingly possible to remain aware of subsequent additions. A repository's professional value could therefore reside not only in what it already contained but also in what it might produce next.

The connection between an individual resource and its source became especially consequential. An instructor encountering a valuable article could immediately examine other work published by the same journal. A useful report could lead to the broader publications of the organization that produced it. An effective video could lead directly to a creator's larger and continually expanding collection. Digital environments thus made it easier for an individual discovery to become an entry point into a continuing source of professional knowledge.

The Problem of Scale

These same developments produced a second historical change: abundance. Lower barriers to production and distribution enabled enormous numbers of resources to become available at a pace that earlier approaches to curation had not been designed to accommodate. This greatly expanded the range of materials potentially useful for teaching, but it also placed increasing pressure on strategies centered primarily on discovering and curating individual items.

The problem can be stated simply. Individual-resource curation takes time. Potential resources must be found, evaluated, contextualized, organized, and sometimes reconsidered as instructional needs change. None of this work becomes less important simply because more content exists. But as production expands, no instructor—or curator—can systematically examine every potentially useful item.

Online video makes the problem particularly visible. TSC's resource-centered model could identify an individual video, evaluate its pedagogical value, provide sociological context, and make it easier for instructors to use. Repeated across hundreds of posts, this approach created a substantial curated collection. Yet the amount of online video continued to grow much faster than any manually curated collection reasonably could. The problem was no longer simply finding enough useful material. It was maintaining meaningful professional awareness within an environment producing more potentially valuable material than could be evaluated one item at a time.

Meanwhile, some of the producers appearing within that environment were themselves creating substantial collections. A creator, research center, professional organization, or other source might produce not one useful resource but dozens or hundreds, with additional work continuing to appear. That development created another possibility. Instead of repeatedly encountering the products of a valuable source as isolated discoveries, the source itself could become an object of professional attention.

This does not make individual-resource curation obsolete. Particular resources still must be evaluated before they are used, and resource-centered curation remains indispensable. Repository-level attention addresses a different problem. It asks whether the source behind a valuable resource may itself deserve continuing attention. Under conditions of abundance, the two approaches can therefore complement one another: one helps determine which particular resources are useful; the other helps determine where limited professional attention may be worth sustaining.

Uneven Disciplinary Recognition

The growth of online repositories did not receive equal attention across disciplinary teaching literatures. Economics provides one useful comparison. Its teaching literature began giving systematic attention to online instructional resources more than two decades ago, including dedicated attention to web-based resources and subsequent examination of particular forms and sources of digital content.

Sociology presents a different historical record. Teaching Sociology has a longstanding interest in instructional media, extending back to early scholarship on the use of film. It also published work examining TSC and the use of curated online video in relation to teaching objectives. Yet the broader proliferation of sociology-oriented online repositories received comparatively little sustained attention in the discipline's pedagogical literature. Substantial collections of sociologically relevant online material developed without comparable scholarly examination of the repositories producing them.

The comparison matters because the development of repositories and disciplinary recognition of them are separate historical processes. A repository can develop a substantial collection, audience, and potential educational relevance without becoming an object of systematic pedagogical discussion. Changes in the actual ecology of professional knowledge may therefore proceed with relatively little corresponding attention in the literature through which a discipline examines its teaching resources.

From Individual Resources to Continuing Sources

The significance of these historical developments can be expressed quite simply. An individual resource is finite; a continuing repository has a future. An article, video, or report can be discovered, evaluated, preserved, and used. The journal, creator, organization, or other source that produced it, however, may continue producing new work. If that future work is potentially valuable, an additional professional problem arises: how can an instructor remain connected to the source over time?

Repository Thinking directs attention to this additional problem. It does not replace attention to individual resources. Rather, it adds another level of professional attention by asking whether a valuable resource points toward a continuing source worth following. Resource-centered curation and repository-centered attention are therefore complementary. The first asks primarily, Is this resource useful? The second adds, Who produced this—and what else do they produce?

Once attention extends to a continuing source, a third question follows: How can I remain connected to what it produces next? This question introduces a temporal dimension that is less central to the evaluation of a completed individual resource. A productive repository continues to develop after its initial discovery. Sustained engagement therefore requires some means of maintaining awareness of its continuing work and preserving accumulated knowledge concerning both the repository and the resources it produces.

Figure 1 summarizes this distinction. Its central point is not that repositories replace individual resources, but that continuing repositories create an additional level of professional attention. The item is finite; the source continues.

The distinction represented in Figure 1 provides the bridge from the historical developments examined here to the practical framework that follows. At the resource level, professional work centers principally on discovering, evaluating, preserving, and applying particular materials. At the repository level, the continuing character of the source creates an ongoing professional relationship. That relationship introduces recurring requirements: productive repositories must be discovered, their continuing work must remain visible, and accumulated knowledge concerning them and their resources must remain recoverable over time.

These requirements provide the foundation for the DMO framework developed in the next section. Discovery, Monitoring, and Organization are not presented as wholly new professional activities. Their significance lies in their integration around continuing repositories as enduring objects of professional attention. In particular, Monitoring assumes greater importance when the object of attention is not a completed resource but a source capable of producing new knowledge in the future.

The historical transformation occurred in the knowledge environment; Repository Thinking is proposed as one response to that transformation. Digital abundance did not eliminate the importance of individual resources or resource-centered curation. It created conditions under which attention to productive continuing sources could become an increasingly valuable complement to them. The next section examines how that continuing relationship can be sustained in practice.

4. Operationalizing Repository Thinking: The DMO Framework

Repository Thinking provides a conceptual orientation toward an environment increasingly characterized by continuing repositories of professional knowledge. The historical developments described in the preceding section raise a practical question: How can instructors sustain meaningful engagement with productive repositories when the scale and continuing expansion of professional knowledge make comprehensive attention to individual resources increasingly difficult?

The DMO framework offers one response by identifying three enduring professional functions: Discovery, Monitoring, and Organization. These functions address different dimensions of the same problem. Discovery helps instructors identify repositories worthy of continued attention. Monitoring provides continuity as those repositories produce new work. Organization preserves accumulated resources, relationships, and professional judgments so that they remain available for future use. Together, these functions provide a practical means of operationalizing Repository Thinking within a knowledge environment whose scale exceeds what can reasonably be managed on a resource-by-resource basis.

DMO should be understood as a functional, rather than a technological, framework. Particular tools may facilitate Discovery, Monitoring, or Organization, but no technology defines any of them. Platforms will emerge, change, and disappear; professional functions remain more durable because they address recurring problems of attention, continuity, and preservation.

Discovery

Discovery is the process through which potentially valuable repositories enter professional awareness. Conventional information seeking commonly begins with a particular need: an instructor searches for an article, video, dataset, classroom activity, or other resource appropriate to an immediate purpose. Repository Thinking retains the importance of such searches while extending their significance. A valuable individual resource may also provide an entry point into a continuing source of professional knowledge.

This extension becomes especially important as the scale of available content increases. When potentially useful resources number in the thousands or millions, comprehensive evaluation of individual items becomes increasingly unrealistic. Repository discovery provides a different form of professional filtering. Rather than attempting to identify every potentially useful resource, instructors can focus on productive sources whose ongoing work is likely to merit future attention. The relevant question therefore expands from Is this resource useful? to Who produced it—and what else do they produce?

Discovery at the repository level also requires judgment. The appearance of one valuable resource does not necessarily establish the continuing value of its source. A repository becomes worthy of sustained attention when its broader body of work demonstrates sufficient relevance, credibility, quality, or productivity to justify continued engagement. Repository Thinking therefore shifts some evaluative attention from the qualities of individual resources toward the ongoing sources from which they emerge.

This does not eliminate resource-level discovery. Individual resources remain the immediate materials through which repositories are often encountered and evaluated. The difference is that discovery need not terminate with the resource itself. A useful article may reveal a productive journal, just as an effective instructional video may reveal a creator whose broader collection warrants exploration. Under conditions of abundance, such entry points provide a practical means of moving from isolated discoveries toward a more manageable ecology of trusted sources.

Monitoring

Identifying a productive repository solves only the initial problem. Continuing repositories change precisely because they keep producing. New scholarship appears, collections expand, and professional conversations develop. Discovery without some mechanism for maintaining awareness therefore leaves instructors dependent upon memory, repeated searching, or chance encounters to reconnect with sources they have already judged valuable.

Monitoring addresses this temporal problem. Its purpose is to maintain continuity of awareness as repositories evolve. Rather than requiring instructors to repeatedly remember and revisit every valued source, monitoring establishes pathways through which subsequent work becomes visible as it appears. RSS feeds, newsletters, subscriptions, alerts, and emerging AI-supported systems illustrate different technological approaches to the same underlying function: maintaining connection with continuing sources of professional knowledge.

The importance of monitoring becomes clearer as the number of repositories increases. Periodically revisiting a handful of favored sources may be manageable; doing so across dozens or hundreds becomes progressively less practical. Monitoring reduces this burden by shifting some professional activity from repeated searching toward sustained awareness. It does not require attention to everything a repository produces. Instead, it keeps the repository within the instructor's professional field of view, enabling potentially valuable developments to be recognized and evaluated.

Monitoring therefore changes the temporal structure of professional knowledge work. Search is episodic: a need arises, a search occurs, and resources are located. Monitoring introduces continuity between those episodes. Sources discovered at one point in a professional career can remain relevant to later work rather than disappear from view once an immediate instructional need has passed.

This distinction is especially important within the framework developed here. Repository Thinking treats productive repositories as enduring objects of professional engagement. Monitoring provides the function through which that engagement can persist over time. Without it, repository discovery risks becoming little more than another isolated encounter.

Organization

Discovery and monitoring address problems of identification and continuity, but they also generate a further challenge. As valuable repositories and resources accumulate, professional knowledge can itself become difficult to navigate. Without deliberate organization, the products of successful discovery and monitoring may simply reproduce at the personal level the same problem of scale encountered in the larger digital environment.

Organization addresses this problem by preserving accumulated professional knowledge in forms that remain retrievable and useful. Its purpose extends beyond storing individual resources. What warrants preservation may also include information about where a resource originated, why it was considered valuable, how it might be used instructionally, and how it relates to other resources or repositories. These accumulated judgments represent intellectual work that would otherwise have to be repeatedly reconstructed.

Repository Thinking consequently broadens the object of organization. A conventional collection may preserve an article, video, or report. A repository-oriented system can additionally preserve pathways back to the continuing source from which that resource emerged. This distinction matters because the source itself may continue generating useful material long after the original item has been saved.

Organization also creates continuity across instructional contexts. A resource encountered while preparing one course may become useful years later in another; an annotation made for one purpose may acquire new relevance as teaching needs change. Preserving these relationships allows earlier professional work to remain available for reconsideration rather than requiring instructors repeatedly to begin anew.

Much of this activity remains largely invisible because it occurs before the classroom moment itself. Identifying productive sources, preserving evaluations, establishing retrieval pathways, and connecting new discoveries with accumulated knowledge are forms of professional labor that make subsequent teaching possible even though they rarely appear in the instructional event. Organization helps make the results of that labor durable.

DMO as an Integrated Professional Practice

Discovery, Monitoring, and Organization describe familiar activities when considered individually. Their significance within the DMO framework lies in their integration around continuing repositories and in the different problems of scale they address.

Discovery reduces an enormous universe of individual resources by identifying productive sources worthy of continuing attention. Monitoring maintains awareness of those sources as their collections develop. Organization preserves the resources, relationships, and professional judgments generated through that continuing engagement. Each function therefore supports the others.

The relationship among them is not necessarily linear. Monitoring may reveal a resource that leads to the discovery of another repository. Organization may expose gaps that prompt new discovery. Continued engagement may also lead instructors to reconsider whether a previously valued repository still warrants attention. DMO is therefore better understood as a recurring professional practice than as a sequence completed once.

Nor does DMO require comprehensive coverage. Its purpose is not to construct an exhaustive map of the professional knowledge environment or to monitor everything potentially relevant to an instructor's work. Such an ambition would reproduce the very scale problem the framework is intended to address. DMO instead supports selective, sustainable engagement with repositories judged sufficiently valuable to merit continuing professional attention.

Over time, the significance of these activities extends beyond efficient information management. Discovery establishes relationships with productive sources; Monitoring maintains those relationships across time; Organization preserves the knowledge and judgments accumulated through them. Sustained across courses, semesters, and years of professional work, these practices provide continuity among encounters that might otherwise remain isolated or be forgotten.
